On May 3rd workers in Chicago that were on their own strike and in support of the 8 hour work day attempted to confront strikebreakers that were entering a plant where workers had been locked out since February. The strikebreakers had the protection of hundreds of police and when the striking workers surged forward to meet them at the gates of the factory the police opened fire killing 2-6 workers. The next day May 4th, in response, anarchists called for a rally at Haymarket Square in Chicago. When police ordered the rally to disperse and marched forward in formation a bomb was thrown toward the police: a riot ensued; untold numbers of people were killed and injured by police bullets, the bomb as well as gunshots from mostly friendly fire killed eight cops. Eight anarchists were later imprisoned in retribution and came to be known as the Haymarket martyrs. Each was tried for murder, the incident and trial led to indignation around the world. The prosecution conceded that none of the eight threw the bomb. The eight were not on trial for throwing bombs, but for being radical labor agitators and anarchists. Two had their sentences commuted to life in prison, one received fifteen years, four were eventually executed, and one, Louis Ling, who stated during the trial “I repeat that I am the enemy of the ‘order’ of today, and I repeat that, with all my powers, so long as breath remains in me, I shall combat it. I declare again, frankly and openly, that I am in favor of using force….I say to you: ‘I despise you. I despise your order; your laws; your force-propped authority.’ Hang me for it!” cheated the hangman by taking his own life in prison days before his scheduled execution. One of the four that was hung, August Spies, moments before his death shouted “the time will come when our silence will be more powerful than the voices you strangle today!” Mayday, May 1st, grew from this and is celebrated around the world as a workers day of action and holiday. The following is a narrative of the organizing process and context of J27 2011 put together by a group of folks with Decolonize/Occupy Seattle who were intimately involved in preparing for that day (the initial proposal for the J27 action can be seen here).] Decolonize Los Campos: Desde Abajo Hacia la Izquierda We are a group of people of many genders, races, abilities and political viewpoints that came together though Decolonize/Occupy Seattle (DOS) and are interested in organizing around a whole-systems approach to worker liberation. Many of us initially met at Westlake, worked together at Seattle Central Community College and united to organize the D12 Port Shutdown. As we work together to create community, we consistently engage in movement building through critical dialogues and acts of resistance. We understand that the struggle of farm workers is one aspect of a larger pattern of resistance, which is a response to the dispossession that capitalism and globalization inflicts on our global community. We were approached by the United Farm Workers (UFW) to work in solidarity with them in their current campaign against the outrageous labor practices of Ruby Ridge Dairy. Workers at Ruby Ridge are forced to work long hours without breaks or lunch, have had their wages stolen, and are denied clean drinking water as they are told to drink from the same place where the cows drink. Their efforts to unionize have been met with threats of violence and most of the workers who led the unionizing effort were fired. Darigold, the company who purchases milk from Ruby Ridge, has neglected to hold Ruby Ridge accountable for its exploitative actions, and in their failure to respond to the needs of the workers, have condoned such unjust working conditions. In honor of the ongoing struggle of these workers, we began our organizing with the commitment to work in solidarity with farm workers, as opposed to taking action for them. We understand that our accountability to the workers themselves is a necessary piece of our intentions for solidarity; it is vital that those on the front lines of their workplace struggles remain central to the decision- making process. This accountability is a major principle we utilized to organize as a collective. In order to make sure this principle was followed, we met directly with workers twice- once in Seattle and once again in Pasco. In these meetings we shared our backgrounds, reasons for organizing and talked about the current struggles we are engaging in. The meetings were multilingual; we spoke in Espanol, English, and Spanglish. Traveling together to Pasco, and hearing stories of the worker’s struggles from the workers themselves, had a strong impact that we carried with us through the organizing process. We were mobilized and energized by our meeting with the workers; forming these relationships was a tangible way to actualize our goals of solidarity, community-building and to provide vision and inspiration for our work within the movement. We also planned the day of action and talked about logical next steps during the meeting. Meeting with workers and leaders from the UFW was an important step in keeping us accountable to the principle outlined above and was also a way to connect our communities. Elemental to this action was art -- the ways in which we created together and how our co-creativity influenced the march. There were two banner making parties leading up to January 27th, 2011. During these parties, food and music were abundant as we expressed our rage, hope and solidarity with paint, projecting nuestra voz onto the void spaces and transforming them into meaning. For many of us, this arte was as much a healing process as it was a symbol used to convey a message. Again, this demonstrates how an action is not just the event itself but also the way that we make it happen. Arte is the heart. In line with our efforts to build community, we began the day of action with a breakfast that we cooked together to welcome the workers to Seattle and to further integrate the wider DOS community into the day of action. We put thought into aligning our food choices with the intentions of the campaign, keeping in mind that we are all connected to waste, worker and animal exploitation and ecological collapse via our food sourcing choices. We continuously work hard to maintain a full systems perspective within our organizing work. The community breakfast was held in the basement of a local church decorated with colorful, creative banners, and picket signs. As we shared food we continued to build community. After sitting for breakfast with some of the workers and their families, we all headed to Westlake Plaza to rally. The rally began as two-high school students from Seattle, who are the children of farm workers, spoke about their families’ experiences and their own feelings around their struggles. We also heard from workers at Ruby Ridge and one of the organizers from the UFW. We then took to the streets in a high-energy march filled with arte and enthusiasm. One of the main goals of the day was to deliver a petition with 20,000 signatures to the Darigold Headquarters. Previous attempts to reach the administration had been unsuccessful; when workers and their allies showed up the doors were closed and guarded. When we arrived at the headquarters, we were greeted by a security guard who stated that only one person would be allowed inside and only one door would be open. However, the crowd did not find this to be acceptable and they opened the other door to allow the voices of the farm workers’ to travel into the offices and the ears of the corporate staff. As a group we requested that the President and CEO of Darigold, Jim Wegner, come out of his office to answer to the demands of the workers and their allies. However, he declined to show his face. Despite his failure to listen to his workers and customers the petitions were delivered by one of the farm worker’s sons, whose path to the office was cleared by protesters. We proceeded with a second rally outside the Darigold headquarters. Speakers included farm workers revealing the truth about their unjust working conditions, two longshoremen speaking out in solidarity, a member of the UW custodian’s union and voices from Decolonize/Occupy Seattle. We ended the day of action with a march around the building and a promise that we will continue to organize until the farm workers’ demands are heard and working conditions at Ruby Ridge improve and meet basic standards of dignity and respect. For many of us, what defined this action as “successful” was the building of relationships with each other, with workers, and with UFW representatives. From this base we aspire to move forward together as we continue to create, organize and overcome. While we consider the action on January 27th to be a success, we also recognize that it is only one step in the struggle for workers’ liberation. We completed the goal of delivering petitions to Darigold and through this process we were strengthened and inspired by the feelings of community, solidarity and accountability that had been our intentions. Our commitment to these principles has given us insight into the next stages of this struggle. We acknowledge that this petition is one step in the battle to hold Darigold accountable for its abuses, and is therefore one aspect in the struggle against the oppressive and exploitative practices of the dairy industry. We also acknowledge that these fights are embedded within the greater, global struggle to reclaim sovereignty of our food and labor. The abuse of farm workers in Darigold feeder farms is not an isolated issue; it is one instance of the way our capitalist food system, which puts power in the hands of wealthy corporations (profiteering off of thousands of wage laborers), continues to perpetuate injustice. The exploitation of farm workers runs parallel to the abuse of other laborers throughout the food system. From the fields to the fine dining room, the exploitation of these workers is tied to their powerlessness within capitalist and racist institutions. In a similar way, consumers of this food are bound to the system. We are forced to make unjust choices as the oppressed roots of our food are veiled from us by a false abundance at the store. Friday’s action was part of the inspiration for a research project to explore these connections between labor abuses, the way our food is produced, and the structure of power in the food system. This project will continue as this struggle builds, both informing and learning from it. Additionally, as we push our organizing efforts forward we recognize that the complexities of all struggles toward liberation require multiple approaches. This applies to the workers’ struggle at Ruby Ridge; thus, our organizing includes a variety of tactics from a diverse group of workers, allies, consumers and union members. Most importantly, we must always acknowledge that workers will continue to organize themselves and lead the course of solidarity. As consumers, we want to reach out to other consumers and continue to educate each other and our communities about the crimes of Ruby Ridge and Darigold. This could look like students addressing the milk purchased by their schools or creating human billboards stationed outside of supermarkets to inform shoppers about the suffering they contribute to when they drink milk. We encourage affinity groups and individuals to think of their own methods of supporting the effort to change the ways of Ruby Ridge Dairy and Darigold. The UFW is not officially calling for any of these actions; these are suggested ideas coming from people independent of any official affiliation to the UFW. A vital next step is to continue traveling to Pasco and Eastern Washington to meet directly with workers and strengthen our solidarity through further relationship building. We also support workers from other dairies, orchards and farms that experience abuses similar to those of Ruby Ridge Dairy, because we know oppression is not isolated. As mentioned, this action was part of a greater web tied in with international worker solidarity, class struggle, Northwest based alliances, and immigrant/economic refugee justicia y libertad. From the onset we knew this action was one aspect of a long-term vision, which could help us unite in building for May Day 2012. A key component of our movement/solidarity bridging was recognizing the historical significance of May Day 2006, an international worker’s day led by the people for the people. This event awoke like a sleeping giant prior to the Decolonize/Occupy Movement. There are many lessons we can learn about the general strike that led millions of economic refugees to take to the streets, walk out of los campos, schools, and divest from the capitalist empire. International Workers Day reminds us that through unity, and through bridging struggles that transcend traditionalist labor movement building, we as a people can create the communities we want to live in. From Food Sovereignty and Workers Rights, from the fields to the cities, we can dismantle the capitalistic empire and its nation-states, and plant, cultivate and nurture a new system. From planting community gardens in our neighborhoods, to painting murals on urban canvasses we will move our struggles forward. By building community with economic refugees/migrants, farm workers, people of color, queer/trans folk and wombyn, we will dismantle all systems! A movement led by the people for people. Do Or Die, Occupy! Support the May 1st Global General Strike!

On February 28th 2012 over 100,000,000 Indian workers will come out on strike. Workers from many unions and sectors are trying to gain improvements in areas such as, pay, pensions, and employment rights.

The strike has been called because workers have said 'enough is enough', after two years of the government refusing to negotiate with unions on any issue. Indian's are sick of the rich getting richer, record economic growth, whilst 400 million people have not got a pot to piss in.

On February 28th 2012, an estimated one hundred million Indian workers will all walk out of work for twenty four hours in what is likely to be the biggest strike in world history.

Over a dozen of India’s largest trade unions have called for and signed up to the strike. The strike will affect many sectors, including public sector banks, ports and docks, railways, insurance, road transport, energy workers, miners, and aviation workers.

“Recent months have seen a mounting wave of militant worker struggles in India, strikes for union recognition in India’s expanding auto sector, including a two-day occupation of a Hyundai plant, a wildcat strike by Air India personnel, and walkouts by telecom workers and coal miners against the central government’s privatization plans.”

The different unions have a variety of different demands, they include gaining the same rights and protection for temporary and contract workers that permanent workers have, raising and extending the minimum wage, resisting the attacks on trade unions, stopping price rises, the creation of a national social security fund, increase in pensions, and combatting corruption.

Despite seeing growth of around 9% each year, more than four hundred million Indians live in absolute poverty. Only a handful of countries enjoy similar growth, yet Indian workers have not even been flicked so much as a crumb from the bosses table. Working and living conditions are equal to, and actually worse than some African countries that are not experiencing the same economic growth.

Indian workers are starting to switch on to the fact that they ‘system’ only serves the wealthy and the bosses.

The last few year has seen a dramatic rise in the number off millionaires and billionaires, yet jobs are lost, wages cut, and unions rights pushed back. India’s richest fifty five people have 1/6th of all the country’s wealth.

We can tell you that May 1st is International Workers Day. We can tell you that in some countries it’s a public holiday to commemorate the historic gains made by the Labor movement. We can tell you that in Los Angeles, May 1st is traditionally a day to celebrate and make a stand for immigrant rights.

But only you can tell us what you’re striking for on May 1st, 2012.

Because the May 1st General Strike is about you. It’s about the debt imposed on you for daring to dream about a college education. It’s about the healthcare you can’t afford, the family member with a disease which goes untreated because they lack insurance. It’s about your car that got repo-ed after you lost your job. It’s about your home that got foreclosed on when the bank went bust.

It’s about your family, who came here for a better future, and got lost in the broken immigration system, and found that they’re denied access to legal work, education and security because they’re undocumented.

It’s about you, the gay kid who gets bullied at school, and will grow up in a country which denies you equality and humanity, simply because you love someone of the same gender.

It’s about the fact there’s no jobs, even if you got that college education and those grades. It’s about the single mother who struggles to support her kids on minimum wage - which is not a living wage. It’s about the woman who makes it through Harvard, works her ass off in one of the best law firms in the country, and constantly loses out on that promotion because she’s not a man.

It’s about the homeless African-American guy who lives on Skid Row and gets thrown in jail for peeing in a park, because there are no toilet facilities on the street for those like him. It’s about the protestor who gets beaten and thrown in jail for holding a sign in a public space which says he’s had enough. It’s about the farmer who’s had to leave his home and work, because the state raised his land tax. It’s about the father who loses a son to a pointless war over oil in a foreign land.

"If there is a social stratum below the exploited underclass, a demographic that suffers most from the absurdities of our society, it is the suicides. The suicidal class—every minute, a few more hit the pavement. Who is more dispossessed than them? They are only recognized when they absent themselves; only their blood speaks on their behalf. They know better than anyone else what must change about this world, and yet in despair of ever changing it they avenge themselves upon the only victims in easy reach—giving a new meaning to the saying that those who make half a revolution dig their own graves.

Imagine a person feeling that his life is out of his control to such an extent that he can only regain possession of it by murdering himself! Can a society really be free and healthy if people will go to such lengths to escape?

So like theft and adultery, suicide is forbidden, an unspeakable abomination. Self-satisfied den mothers who have never grappled with debilitating depression feel entitled to sneer at the cowardice of those who make the difficult decision to end their lives. Even the terminally ill are not to choose for themselves when and how they pass away—there are laws against it, as if the living could legislate for those crossing over into death! What does it say of a civilization that it not only forbids its denizens to kill themselves, but does not even permit the question of whether life is worth living?"

"According to a federal report, one in every 100 U.S. adults made plans to commit suicide in 2010. And for every person who takes his or her life - there's one every fifteen minutes in the United States - there are many more who think about, plan or attempt suicide.

Young adults aged 19 to 29 were far more likely than adults 30 and older to have suicidal thoughtsm make suicide plans and attempt suicide. The report also found that rates of serious suicidal thoughts were much higher among women than men.

The rates of suicide attempts ranged from 1 in 50 adults in Georgia to 1 in 15 in Utah and 1 in 67 in Rhode Island. Overall, however, 2.2 million adults (1%) reported making suicide plans in the past year. More than 1 million (0.5%) said that they attempted suicide in the past year.

Researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration also said that suicide rates were consistently higher in western states, especially the Rocky Mountain states. Adults in the Midwest and West were found to be more likely to have suicidal toughts than adults in the Northeast and South. Adults in the Midwest were more likely to make suicide plans those those in the South."

"There is an old African saying, "I am we." If you met an African in ancient times and asked him who he was, he would reply, "I am we. This is revolutionary suicide: I, we, all of us are the one and the multitude. So many of my comrades are gone now. Some tight partners, crime partners, and brothers off the block are begging on the street. Others are in asylum, penitentiary, or grave. They are all suicides of one kind of another who had the sensitivity and tragic imagination to see the oppression. Some overcame; they are the revolutionary suicides. Others were reactionary suicides who either overestimated or underestimated the enemy, but in any case were powerless to change their conception of the oppressor.

The differences lies in hope and desire. By hoping and desiring, the revolutionary suicide chooses life; he is, in the words of Nietzsche, "an arrow of longing for another shore." Both suicides despise tyranny, but the revolutionary is both a great despiser and a great adorer who longs for another shore.

The reactionary suicide must learn, as his brother the revolutionary has learned, that the desert is not a circle. It is a spiral. When we have passed through the desert, nothing will be the same.

You cannot bare your throat to the murderer. As George Jackson said, you must defend yourself and take the dragon position as in karate and make the front kick and the back kick when you are surrounded. You do not beg because your enemy comes with the butcher knife and the hatchet in the other. "He will not become a Buddhist over night." The Preacher said that the wise man and the fool have the same end: they go to the grave as a dog. Who sends us to the grave? The unknowable, the force that dictates to all classes, all territories, all ideologies; he is death, the Big Boss. An ambitious man seeks to dethrone the Big Boss, to free himself, to control when and how he will go to the grave.

There is another illuminating story of the wise man and the fool, found in Mao's Little Red Book. A foolish old man went to the North Mountain and began to dig; a wise old man passed by and said, "Why do you dig; foolish old man? Do you not know that you cannot move the mountain with a little shovel?" But the foolish old man answered resolutely, "While the mountain cannot get any higher, it will get lower with each shovelful. When I pass on, my sons and his sons and his son's sons will go on making the mountain lower. Why can't we move the mountain?"

And the foolish old man kept digging, and the generations that followed after him, and the wise old man looked on in disgust. But the resoluteness and the spirit of the generations that followed the foolish old man touched God's heart, and God sent two angels who put the mountain on their backs and moved the mountain.

This is the story Mao told. When he spoke of God he meant the six hundred million who had helped him to move imperialism and bourgeois thinking, the two great mountains.

The reactionary suicide is "wise," and the revolutionary suicide is a "fool," a fool for the revolution in the way Paul meant when he spoke of being "a fool for Christ." That foolishness can move the mountains of oppression; it is our great leap and our commitment to the dead and the unborn."
